Trusting God and not leaning on your own understanding

I absolutely love, love, love the book of Proverbs! So much timeless wisdom and helpful guidance that is as relevant for us today as it was back when it was written by Solomon and the other contributors. We could spend a whole month simply studying one chapter at a time!

For today’s reading however, I am just going to look at a small section of Proverbs 3.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and he will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Personally, and I imagine for most people who are reading this, Proverbs 3:5-6 is one of those key scriptures that the Holy Spirit has used over the years as a reminder to TRUST Him.

It’s annoying because often I just want to stamp my feet or click my fingers and say, “Come on God! What now? Why? When? Move! So and so doesn’t have to wait or struggle so why do I?!”

Yes, I keep it very real with God and guess what? He keeps it real with me! He always takes me back to, “Trust me. Lean on me. Worried? Stressed? Frustrated? Relax and keep your eyes on me - I’ve got you.”

On a personal level, it has been an incredibly difficult journey for me over the past 13 years to trust Him with my personal life. I was engaged to me married and after the engagement broke up and I went through a time and process of healing, I thought that for sure God would have brought someone into my life by now. Instead, I have had to watch many friends and relatives step into relationships with ease and often because they made moral compromises.

Yes, I keep it very real with God and guess what? He keeps it real with me! He always takes me back to, “Trust me. Lean on me. Worried? Stressed? Frustrated? Relax and keep your eyes on me - I’ve got you."

I have wrestled with God frequently and consistently in this area and trusting Him has been a huge, tiring and emotional hurdle. However, nothing is ever wasted in His kingdom and over the years He has taught me so many invaluable lessons that have developed my character as a woman and maturity as a Christian.

Sometimes trusting Him with the earthly desires we have is really tough and when we put our heads on our pillows at night we may shed tears for what we do not have yet. But the peace in our hearts of living a life fully committed to Him and His ways; far outweighs any tears because ultimately what is important to remember is that we are preparing for our eternal life. All that we go through on earth, the mountains we face, the joys and the sorrows; all come together to knit us further and further into the Father’s heart.

We all have areas of life that we find it easier to trust Him with and others where we struggle to step into full trust. For me, trusting Him with my health, job and finances is easy but perhaps these are the areas you struggle to trust Him with. Whatever the issue, we all have lessons to learn in trusting our loving Father and He uses very specific situations that are most effective to help us grow individually.

Prayer

Father thank you for this promise that you have made to us in Proverbs 3. We choose to trust you today with all our hearts for every aspect of our lives. Today we choose to keep our eyes on You and not the circumstances. We commit all our choices and decisions to You; knowing that You love and will direct us, and we are never alone on the journey we are on.
